Giovanni is more than just a rapper. He is a father, poet,
coach, scholar, motivational speaker, as well as, an MC. When his words
are set to music all of his various shades and sides come through to the
listener live and in living color. His ability to match metaphors and
similes has drawn comparisons to Tupac Shakur, as well as, Nikki
Giovanni (from whom he took his stage name).
The heralded wordsmith
has spent the past two decades building life into words; words into
verses; and bringing verses to life. Yet simple words cannot define
Giovanni’s life, nor his verses. He is not bound by constraints of
categories such as pop, gangsta, bling-bling, crossover, or regional
location. This Son of the South embraces his Southern heritage without
being defined by it. His style comes in a variety of forms, on
various topics, set to an array of beats, rhythms, and tempos. He
epitomizes diversity.
The talented MC from
Magnolia, Arkansas has received numerous accolades since first taking
the stage at the age of 9. He made a name for himself throughout his
home state of Arkansas and the entire Southwest during his time as a
student at the University of Arkansas. In between receiving two college
degrees and becoming one of the youngest coaches in NCAA Division I
Women’s Basketball, Giovanni found time to take top rap honors at a
national college student talent search.
In the
fall of 2002 after turning down numerous recording contracts, he and his
best friend, Cory Childs, also of Magnolia, began their own record
label, Janglin’ disChords, LLC. The first full-length
solo album, This Game, was released in 2003 and has sold out of
stores across Arkansas several times. His radio success with the first
single, What the Problem Is?, led the multi-tasker to receive his
very own hip hop radio program, The Home Team featuring Franchise
Player - Giovanni. With the help of his personal manager, DJ, and
co-host, KiKi Polk (Emerson, AR), the show quickly rose to the number
one rated program in its time slot. In April 200, Giovanni signed a
national distribution deal with major independent record label, Red
Galaxy Records, in Hollywood, California.
Giovanni’s
forth-coming highly-anticipated second solo set, Son of the South,
produced by Big Keys of Little Rock, Arkansas, has already produced a
hit local club single – Step Aside (which can be heard by going
to
www.redgalaxyrecords.com and clicking on “Giovanni” in the artist
category). But it’s his more poignant, thought-provoking cut,
Runnin’ Man, about, for, and to deadbeat dads that has everyone from
salons to saloons talking.
William
Jeffrey Flanigan’s (aka Giovanni) facility to breakdown barriers between
young and old, black and white, male and female can only be described as
a gift from God. He has taken his gift and added an enormous work ethic
and multiplied the sum by pure hunger to create nothing short of a
musical genius. It’s just too bad words can’t define him. |
